People from the Coastside Fishing Club filed a petition against some laws that protected marine life incertain areas. This group of people was mostly fishermen who argued thatthe Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) should not have been imposed.

Being a fisherman and an aspiring marine biologist this article that Damion wrote about hit me from both sides. From the side of the Fisherman i could see why they would want to open up more game for them to fish. As a fisherman you want to be able to fish all different types of fish and just enjoy the sport in many different ways and that is why this club tried to get a petition to open up new experiences. But wanting to be a marine biologist has me on the opposite side of the fishermen, because even though i fish i only "catch and release". I have grown to love marine life and just the marine world in genereal and right now the marine world is already in a deep hole. The MPA places bans on fish that they feel are already in serious danger so why on earth would they lift that ban just for a stupid petition. People need to realize that there is so much more to fishing than just killing as many fish as possible and that the marine world is full of so much beauty that we have to take care of or else we could lose it.

Rescuers trying to catch hawk with nail in head

"What I saw disgusted and saddened me," she said in an e-mail. "The hawk had what looked to be a finishing nail through its head. It could only have happened from a nail gun, but it's puzzling as they are generally not an accurate tool unless you are right beside what you are trying to nail."

Rescuers are on the hunt for a wild red-tailed hawk that somehow has been shot in the head with a nail gun. The nail is still currently lodged in the head of the bird and the bird has not been captured yet where they can remove it properly. It is still a mystery of how the HELLLL the bird got a nail in its head. Some say that it could just be a freak accident, but others that understand a nail gun say that they arent accurate or powerful enough to travel long distances so it seems that it was an intentional and near point blank shot. The rescuers have been following the bird and are still trying to catch it and say that it still continues to hunt but it must be in terriable pain although might still be able to be saved. I find this story very unusual and cruel. I am a huge animal person and the fact that someone would diliberalty shoot a defensless animal in the head with a nail gun is a bad as it gets. Not only that but the fact that the animal is still alive is pretty amazing, a head shot is usally associated with an instant kill shot. Whatever caused this im just glad the animal is still able to function and i hope that the rescuers are able to catch and save this bird of prey soon.

Going for the Look

Should a company hire based on looks? Or is that considered discrimination and should not be allowed? Marshal Cohen from the article believes that a company does have the right to hire based on looks. I also agree with this in a way, I believe that a company has the right to make business and they have the right to do so in which ways they feel necessary. Although there is a difference between selective choosing in hiring and discrimination. I am all for a company that wants to hire a person that they think will better their business. Cohen stated “Being able to fine a brand enhancer, or what I call a walking billboard, is critical.” Cohen is saying that if you need to chose between two people then  you would choose the one that you feel will better your business even if that means hiring the better looking one. Most people that work in a store are not only there to work but also to model off the clothes that the business is selling so finding a person that would look “good” in those clothes and possibly make more sales would be a good business decision.

Mr. Serrano from the article stated, "We were suppose to approach someone in the mall who we think will look attractive in our store, if that person said, 'I have never worked in retailing before,' we said: 'Who cares? We'll hire you.' But if someone came in who had lots of experience and not a pretty face, we were told not to hire them at all." Now this does seem very cruel and boarder line discrimination, but then again there is no law of discrimination that involve looks so stores legally can do this, but is it right? I can see both sides of this because like I previously discussed, a company has the right to do what they feel is essential to make business and it’s their choice. But I truly believe that if a company is going to base their entire hiring process on the looks of people then they might and most likely will pass up a lot of really good salespeople. It is very likely that a company might hire a person who has the looks they want but that person might be very shallow or not approachable while on the other hand they could have hired a person that may have not had the looks they wanted but that person was a really good salesperson and could possibly make a lot of sales and at the end of the day a company is in business to make money and sales. 

Although I am not against companies hiring based on looks (I’m not for it, I just feel that they have the right), I am completely against any form of discrimination based on race, age or gender. Olophius Perry was quoted saying, "If you're hiring by looks, then you can run into problems of race discrimination, national origin discrimination, gender discrimination, age discrimination and even disability discrimination." I truly agree with this statement. A company may not consciously be discriminating race age or gender but it just might look that way to the public. Abercrombie and Fitch is a company that is known for their selective hiring by hiring only good looking people, and it has come to the attentions of Americans that they only seem to be hiring "good-looking young white people." Not only is it illegal to discriminate but it is bad for business, most people will not want to support a company that they feel is being racist or sexist. I know I wouldn’t. Racism and Sexism is still a very real and serious issue and if a person is told they can’t do something or turned away from a job based on the color of their skin or the bases of their gender then that is something that needs to be stopped. Companies have no right to judge on race, sex or gender and they certainly have no right to hire that way.

To sum it up, I feel that companies are certainly granted the right to pursue success and business as with all Americans but they must do so within the law and the rights of others. Since discrimination based on looks is not technically illegal I feel that companies have the right or hire their ideal worker or their “walking bill-board” but they must stay within a fine line. Any discrimination of race, gender or age should not be allow or tolerated in anyway and all those companies that choose to do so are on a road to destruction in my mind.

 

Free : Being Remembered

Being remembered. Has anyone ever wondered what people will say when they are gone? I know that I have wondered if i have lived my life so far in a way that has impacted others lives in a good way. After doing my two last posts on Steve Jobs and Al Davis two who truly changed the world in their own way, it had me thinking what I will do to be remembered. In my mind a person lives a successful life if they pursue their own happiness and they change people’s lives in a positive way and i hope that i am able to fulfill this.

I’m not as concerned with my pursuit of happiness because I have come to the realization that happiness is more of a choice, a person can choose to do what they want to be happy and they can choose to be happy, i know some may disagree with that but for me it works. I'm the kind of person that you will rarely see down; I believe that life is a gift and no matter what we have to enjoy it.

I am however not really concerned but more curious about if i will be able to leave this life knowing that i have changed or impacted peoples life's in a positive way. I know that no matter which way my life takes me I am going to make it my main goal to be the one to make a change. I have laid in bed thinking about it, I want to be remembered as somebody, I want to be remembered as that guy who put all his effort in to everything he thought necessary. I want someone, on the day of my funeral, to be able to say “ This man has made a difference”

Re: Edwin Mora

This man, whether you love or hate Apple products changed the world, he changed the way people and companies look at hardware, software and how smart phones and other devices can be used to make our everyday easier. And i'm almost sure that if wasn't for him and the company he created, technology wouldn't have turn out to be how we know it today.
Edwin used one of his free post to talk about the life of the Apple founder, Steve Jobs. For those who do not know, Jobs recently passed away due to pancreatic cancer which lead to respiratory arrest. I agree with Edwin 100% with what he said in his post and that is that Steve Jobs whether you like it or not has changed the world for ever. There are not many people that can truly say they have changed the world as drastically has Jobs has done. He has created and innovated so many pieces of technology that it is hard to keep track. Things such as the iPod (which everyone and the mother has), the iPhone, the tablet and the mac book. He had the ability and the intelligence to take an idea in his head and turn it into an actual product not many can say they can do the same. He has changed the world and like Edwin said without him we would be years behind the current technology that we have. Steve Jobs was and will remain a legend in the technology world and I hope Apple will be able to function without him, Jobs was a true genius.
